A Funeral Director’s Guide to Truly Meaningful Goodbyes

Dean Weber  Funeral Director – Serving Families for Over 30 Years

“A funeral isn’t about closure. It’s about connection.”

After thirty years in funeral service — from urban mid-America to rural, multicultural New Zealand — I’ve learned that every life is unique, and so every farewell should be too.

As funeral directors, our purpose is to guide people through one of life’s most difficult experiences with grace, care, and creativity. It’s not just about tradition. It’s not just about logistics. It’s about helping people make meaning in the midst of loss.

From Urban U.S. to Rural New Zealand: The Journey That Changed Me

I’ve had the privilege of serving in vastly different communities — from cities in the U.S. to the rich cultural tapestry of rural New Zealand. The customs and expectations in each place have been different, but the universal need for empathy and support remains the same.

Adapting to Māori protocols and deeply personal family values taught me that flexibility and genuine encouragement are essential. Every family grieves in their own way — and they deserve a farewell that reflects their loved one, not a template.

A Farewell That Stays With Me: Jude’s Story

Of the many services I’ve led, one stands out: the funeral of Jude Collings. Her passing was an absolute emotional blow to all who knew her. But what unfolded in the days that followed was nothing short of profound.

Together, we created a farewell that captured her vibrant spirit. Her family still reaches out to me today — not to revisit the details, but to tell me how the way we honoured Jude continues to help them live without her.

Their ongoing gratitude has been a quiet reminder of the true weight of our work. I don’t often view my role as extraordinary — I carry a deep humility in what I do — but families like Jude’s remind me that the way we show up matters.

Helping Families Make Decisions Through the Whirlwind

Loss creates a whirlwind of emotion. One of the best tools we have as funeral professionals is the ability to slow things down.

We gently guide families through each decision, allowing space to reflect rather than react. And when conflict arises — which it sometimes does — we step in to help dissect the situation, understand each viewpoint, and offer creative, respectful alternatives.

Breaking the Myth: It’s Not Just a Business

One of the most common misconceptions about the funeral industry is that we’re only in it for the money — or that professional funeral services aren’t necessary.

But the truth is, most of us entered this work simply to help.

We’re here at 2 a.m. when the call comes. We show up without question, because that’s what’s needed. We’re not just providing a service — we’re offering guidance, emotional support, and often, a steady hand during chaos.

Every family I support is important to me.  The need to provide the best support and service I can to each and every family is profoundly important personally.

Green Funerals, Livestreams & The Future of Farewells

The landscape of funeral service is changing — and for the better.

Natural and eco-friendly funerals are seeing a meaningful resurgence. These options have existed for years, but more families are embracing their simplicity and connection to nature. I've been privileged to facilitate green burials, family-led services, and ceremonies that feel organic and real.

Technology has also opened new doors. Livestreamed services have allowed people across the world to be part of their loved one’s farewell. It’s not about replacing in-person experiences — it’s about expanding inclusion and connection.

I also believe in regular internal reflection as a professional business provider. Who we are, what we offer, and how the public sees us — these are things worth examining. With innovation (including AI) on the horizon, I’m hopeful we’ll continue evolving in ways that honour both tradition and the needs of today’s families.
